Common to Extended AP/Extended Port

Q: The sharing fee is higher than that for general WiFi routers and switching hubs. Why?

A: It is expensive because it is a corporate product intended for large-scale use. Compared to general products, it has higher stable performance, integrated management, and advanced security features.

Q: Can I stop using the Extended AP or Extended Port during the process?

A: You can stop using it, but even if you stop using it, due to the lease contract, you will still have to pay the fee until the end of the contract.

Q: Is it possible to apply for Extended AP/Port at a later date rather than now?

A: In principle, it is not possible.

Q: Is it possible to use Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research?

A: Only incentive expenses can be covered by external funds. In principle, other external funds cannot be used to pay contributions, but depending on the funds, it may be possible, so please consult with the Finance Department.

Q: Can I change the funding source (budget code) for my contribution midway?

A: Yes, you can.

Q: If a faculty member who is using an Extended AP or Extended Port transfers, what will happen to the expansion AP or expansion port that they were using?

A: During the contract period (2022.3 - 2026.2), you cannot stop using the Extended AP and Extended Port, so they will be maintained. Please nominate someone to take over the use and contribution burden.

Extended AP

Q: My Extended AP has malfunctioned. What should I do?

A: Please contact Information Technology Center (support@cc.uec.ac.jp)

Q: Does the contribution include the cost of installing the AP and wiring?

A: Not included. The expansion AP includes only the AP itself, power adapter, and expansion port for AP connection. The user is responsible for wiring and fixed installation to the AP. For more information, please check 「学内無線LANアクセスポイントの整備方針に関する申し合わせ 」 (the Agreement regarding the maintenance policy for on-campus wireless LAN access points).

Q: How many devices can be connected to one AP?

A: Assuming online meetings and video viewing, please consider 20 to 30 APs per AP. It is not possible to give an accurate estimate as it greatly depends on the environment and the amount of communication of the device. If the connection is for communication confirmation, more than 100 devices can be connected according to the catalog.

Q: What is the radio range per AP?

A: The manufacturer’s information indicates that the distance is approximately 100m, but in practice we recommend placing it at 1/2 or less of this distance.

However, the system automatically adjusts the AP’s radio field strength taking into account nearby APs, so it may be shorter than expected. The communication distance may be shortened due to the influence of APs brought in from outside (tethering devices, mobile routers, home WiFi routers installed in the laboratory, etc.).

Extended Port

Q: Is there any work required on the user side when installing an Extended Port?

A: No work is required. The Extended Port itself will be installed by a contractor. Wiring beyond the Extended Port (from the Extended Port to the information outlets in each room, etc.) is carried out by the Information Technology Center or the building network wiring staff (net-tech) at the request of the user.
